Antique Early 1900s PeDe SOLIDA German Box Conical Burr Coffee Grinder

Beautiful early 1900s West German PeDe "SOLIDA" box style coffee grinder. Very rare model with turned wooden bean hopper.

Drawer is finger joined - held in place with two tensioned metal spring blades. Grind adjustment is inside the box reached through the drawer opening.

Box measures 6 square x. Overall height including handle is approximately 11.

Box was repaired and refinished using several coats of MinWax Satin varnish and hand-polished to a soft luster with 0000 steel wool and paste wax. Grind adjustment is reached through the front opening (see photos). Grinder mechanism was disassembled and cleaned using a wire brush.

Felt feet were added after refinishing. Antique/vintage coffee grinders from Germany were usually made from Beech hardwood for good reason; Beech is native to Europe and has a special property - it does not splinter!

This makes it the ideal wood for any item that is used by hand. In addition, Beech has special oils that preserve the wood and makes the wood even more beautiful with age. The grinder has a conical burr which is the best type to achieve a uniform particle grind that gives a more even extraction of flavors, so that the bitter taste that comes from particle dust is not created. The compact size of the mill allows you to use it between the knees, in your lap or on the counter. If you are interested in vintage items or small antiques, please check my other listings.
