The History of ELMA The Echevarria brothers Gregory and Eugenio along with Cerrajera Leibar, Francisco Mendizabal, and Daniel Arcauz were all union workers for the Unión Cerrajera de Mondragón and the largest employer in La villa de Mondragón in the Basque region of Spain.
They along with a few other friends and financiers formed a new company called ELMA S. Founded in Arrasate, Spain in 1924 to produce meat choppers, ice cream makers, hand tools and coffee grinders.
The company started with around 50 employees and employed up to 1000 workers during the prewar 1930's. The 1940's brought a time of unrest for the company, a hard time for the Basque region and all of Spain shaken by repression and turmoil at the hands of the Franco régime. Office buildings survived the war and modern development and is now a historic landmark. Due to the short time of ELMA S. Prewar coffee grinder production the original vintage ELMA coffee grinders are highly valued by collectors. Please sent us pictures of the damaged items.
